NGC 4945 is a barred spiral galaxy and is thought to be quite similar to our Milky Way Galaxy. X-ray observations show that NGC 4945 has an unusual, energetic nucleus that might house a large black hole. The galaxy is quite large, spanning 77,000 light years and is receding from us at 560 km per second. It was discovered by James Dunlop in 1826.
